There is some sort of healing in music, so much so that it can be used as a form of therapy. Music can heal the soul in ways that science can’t.
A former member of the Puerto Rican boy band Menudo, Ash Ruiz, gained his love for music at an early age. It was his Grandma Jean who imparted to him his passion for music. They spent hours training and practicing their favorite songs.
“I have the most precious memories of my Grandma Jean doing everything with a song. It didn’t matter if she was doing laundry or making lasagne, she was always singing and her voice was rich, velvety, and beautiful.”, Ash shares PEOPLE.
Ash was just 8 years old when his his Grandma Jean taught him the song “Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole.
It then became his favorite song to play. Every year on his grandmother’s birthday, he would perform that song and dedicate it to her.
However, Ash’s singing career took him to a lot of places that he had less time and days to visit his grandma Jean. But that did not stop him of reaching out to her. He would sometime use the telephone to call her or video chat with her.
This August 2nd, 2017 was Grandma Jean’s 98th birthday. Ash happened to be in Florida and decideed to visit on July 27th. He woke her up with a rendition of “Come Back to Sorrento.”
Grandma Jean, the birthday girl, requested for one more song.
“Unforgettable, that’s what you are,” he sings. “Unforgettable though near or far, like a song of love that clings to me.”
“Unforgettable in every way, and forever more, that’s how you’ll stay. That’s why, darling, it’s incredible…”
Those wonderful lyrics has moved Grandma Jean to tears.
“I could feel right away that there was a giant lump in my throat and my heart. That just broke my heart wide open. I told myself that I would hold it together and finish the whole song. My voice broke on the last note and the tears started coming out of my eyes.” emotional Ash shares PEOPLE.
Ash continues to share his heart to PEOPLE, “It’s such a beautiful thing, to just put yourself in their shoes, to put yourself in their skin, even if it is scary. Have a little bit of courage to go there, because their beauty will be revealed.”
