We all know what baby talk is, right? But what exactly is baby speak? Where does it come from? And even more mysteriously how do infants create it?
Most parents can tell you about unique, interesting words their infants have created. One in particular comes to mind. My daughter’s word for water was gar. Where she got that I have no idea. In fact, she had a dozen or so other words and I wish I had written them down to remember them.
If you have had a similar experience, please let us know in the comments. And of course, let us know what words you have been able to understand.
But it goes further. I remember visiting a friend and listening to a conversation between his twin sons. I had no idea what they ware saying but clearly they understood each other. Needless to say, I was fascinated.
Perhaps you have had similar experiences.
The video below provides an example of twins using there own unique language to carry on a conversation. Clearly there is a degree of understanding between them. I wish I knew what they were saying.
Science has labeled the phenomenon Cryptophasia. And, though it has been studied at some length, there appears to be no consensus. Reading their attempts to explain it quickly gets boring.
This does not diminish the fascination it holds for parents, friends, family and loved ones. Just watch how these two express themselves with conviction, intent and . . . well I won’t spoil the special part.
