With all the things that we see in the news, it feels like the world can sometimes be a terrifying place to live in. But there’s still hope for us! With every random act of kindness, lives are changed and the world we live in also creates a conducive atmosphere for people to thrive. Imagine when two strangers at a Westmoreland County hospital exchanged random acts of kindness, they had no idea their interaction would go viral!
Gloria Porter was treated for pneumonia for a week and ended up hospitalized at Excela Frick Hospital. While being treated there, she spent her free time watching the construction workers build the front entrance of the hospital. One snowy day, Gloria and a few others did something unexpected. Gloria was concerned about the safety of the workers and how hazardous it is to work in that extreme weather.
“This one guy, he waved – and so we waved back!” Gloria told the reporters at WTAE Pittsburgh. Her eyes lit up as she reminisced over those moments. The man who waved was a union worker, Jeff Rick. This man had noticed Gloria watching out from the window. It accured to him that this woman was somehow enthralled with their work so he decided to take the opportunity to create a connection between himself and the stranger. A wave is a plain courtesy people basically do, yet it creates an unspoken bond between two people.
Jeff wrote “get well” in chalk on the side of a high beam that was facing Gloria’s room. “I thought it would be a kind gesture to tell her to get well,” Jeff told WTAE. This simple act of kindness made Gloria’s day, so the woman decided to return a sweet message. She wrote “stay safe” on a large piece of paper and held it up to the window for Jeff to see.
“The sign kind of crushed me . . . because that’s iron worker lingo to stay safe,” Jeff said. The two strangers made a great impact on each other. A wonderful kind of friendship was formed.
This story reminds us how simple it can be to turn someone’s day around. It is heartwarming to see a friendship forming between unlikely duos like Jeff and Gloria.
