Maryanne and Tommy were born with Down’s Syndrome, a genetic disorder associated with intellectual disability, a characteristic facial appearance, and weak muscle tone. But their condition did not hinder them from having a happily life after all. It was love at first sight for Maryanne and Tommy. When these two lovebirds first met, they couldn’t stop talking about each other. They recently celebrated the 22nd anniversary of their happy marriage.

This couple met for the first time almost 24 years ago at a local training center for people with Down’s Syndrome or people with learning disabilities. They got to know each other deeply as they started dating. And after a year and a half, Tommy finally popped the question. Tommy proposed to Maryanne in a very adorable way. He presented Maryanne with a toy ring from a vending machine. Maryanne’s mom gave the couple her blessing for the marriage.

In July of 1995, the two officially got married in a church ceremony in Essex with a celebration with their dear friends and family. “They love one another dearly, respect one another and are completely honest,” Maryanne’s sister, Linda Newman said.

It was not an easy journey for the both of them since a lot of criticism about their marriage emerged here and there. Maryanne’s mother said that she had to endure a ton ‘flak’ for letting her daughter marry. Almost everyone doubted that their relationship would last.

The couple remained positive and determined despite the odds. “My wedding was the best day of my life. I was shocked when Tommy proposed, but I didn’t have to think twice about saying yes,” Maryanne said to The Express. “Tommy and I never argue,” she added. “I love my husband very much. He is my best friend.”

Maryanne’s sister Linda decided to create a Facebook page documenting their love story and has quickly gone viral. Over 25,000 people are following the adventures of the loving couple. The two now live next to Maryanne’s mother and very closely to the rest of their families.

“Their relationship is so special because it is pure, they don’t understand bad emotions of hate,” Linda concludes.
