Police Officer Jon Sterling is a dedicated policeman that at times goes above and beyond the call of duty. Jon Sterling has been living out the sworn responsibilities a police officer should uphold. Eccentric as he would describe himself. during his service four years ago, a Korean War veteran named Norm called to report some suspicious activity. Police Officer Sterling eagerly responded to that seemingly routine call. But what happened next was life-changing for both of them.
A strong bond, like that of a son and a father, was formed between Jon and Norm for having similarities in their character – specifically that of being eccentric. But there was a time that they were not able to see each other since Norm simply vanished. Officer Sterling searched for Norm up in the mountains and he didn’t stop until he found his old friend.
What concerned Officer Jon Sterling is that Norm was diagnosed with dementia. Alzheimer’s Society defined it as– ‘dementia’ describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. These changes are often small to start with, but for someone with dementia they have become severe enough to affect daily life. A person with dementia may also experience changes in their mood or behavior.’
Norm had all of those symptom and in turn was hospitalized. Officer Jon Sterling was there to the rescue. The court awarded Officer Sterling guardianship. Officer Sterling also applied for veteran benefits for Norm on top of his Social Security benefits which meant he could receive the care he needed. But to have a suitable placement for Norm, they needed to raise $5,500.00.
Officer Sterling was determined to give Norm the best care possible to have the optimum quality of life. With that, he got the idea to launch a GOFundMe page. GoFundMe ‘is a crowdfunding platform that allows people in some but not all countries to raise money for events ranging from life events such as celebrations and graduations to challenging circumstances like accidents and illnesses. The company is based in San Diego, California.’
There will always be hope in humanity. With the joint efforts and generosity of people around the world, the GoFundMe campaign was a great success! It was launched on February 26 and raised a total $9,365.00 as of March 1. Officer Sterling’s Facebook post expressed Norm’s gratitude for all those who helped. Norm said that the outpouring of love and concern would make him cry.
