A local Ruston, Louisiana bank got the biggest surprise the day 73-year old Otha Anders wheeled in 15 water jugs overflowing with pennies to cash in. Now this is no easy task for an old man, so he enlisted family and friends who are more than willing to help. After all, it is not everyday that you get to witness a half century of penny saved and being cashed in.
Now a penny may not be an ideal collection. It is a one-cent coin equal to one hundredth of a dollar and most often than not, used for emphasis to denote no money at all. So how come an old man ended up with 15 water jugs full of pennies? He must be out of his mind you might say to actually think that with his life savings of pennies he may end up a millionaire? But Otha Anders does not dream of anything big when he started with his savings. But rather it is with the belief that God has a hand in all things.
In the early 1970’s, Otha Anders started to save every penny that comes his way. He has found pennies on the ground, was given as change by cashiers, found some left behind by beggars (now that is some wise beggar there). It doesn’t matter in what situation or place he found the pennies. For him it is a treasure, important and with value.
Othan Anders is a man of faith. He sees blessing in every shape and form – big or small. It is his belief that every penny that comes his way is, in itself, a blessing from God. And so it is with great gratitude to God that he saved every penny. Someday, God will show him what to do with this immense stack of pennies.
The day Otha Anders wheeled in his 15 water jugs of pennies, Bank Vice President Jennie Cole was in awe!.And somewhat disheartened – banks don’t like having to work with pennies because it is a tedious job to count them. But old man Anders is a costumer of long-standing and the bank value his endeavors. His penny savings amounted to $ 5,136.14 and had it deposited to his account. It was one heavy load lifted but it also left a void inside his home where the 15 water jugs of pennies stayed for far too long.
All in all, it was a good outcome for very good intention. Otha Anders with his heart full of faith and gratitude to God’s simplest blessing. Thought: What would have happened if they had checked for rare coins?
